Escape from spike Triathlon
Cobh to take on the Escape from Spike Island triathlon. Both distance of sprint
and Olympic were being taken on. On the day we were greeted with sunny skies and
calm waters. First up was the Olympic distance which started with a 1.7km swim
from spike island back to Cobh, first out of the water was Keith followed by
Tommy, Denis and Paddy, Tommys green hat was great for Denis and Paddys as they
followed him all the way. The 40km bike followed with an out and back 5km course
repeated 4 times. Tommy was gaining on Keith for the whole 40km which made for a
great race as Keith was trying to keep ahead of him for the run section but
ultimately Tommy came a cropper when he crashed coming back onto T2 (Tommy loves
speed) and as we know now he has a few very sore ribs. Denis and Paddy were
having a race on their own which Denis was winning only fractionally. The 10km
run was a 4 lap route around the pier in Cobh was flat except for on short hill.
First home on the day with an impressive 15th overall was Keith in
2.29.22followed by Denis in 2.41.27 and Paddy in 2.49.36. In the sprint distance
Richie and Martina were competing, there was a different swim course which was
along the coast. First out of the water was Richie followed closely by Martina.
As per usual Richie was having a great cycle but Martina was slowly catching
Richie but when it came to the run Martina came out on top in a time of 1.19.38 finishing 5th woman and first in her age
Richie had to pull out due to a sore leg (he was blaming the 2 weeks of warm
weather training in Spain). A great day was had by must of us, the atmosphere
around the bike and run cycle was great as crowds of people cheered the
competitors on. This is a race that most of us will return to again next year.
