The Munster Time Trial Championships were held on Thursday 30 June in Patickswell, Limerick on the same 18.3km course that was used in the Cycling Pursuits Time Trial League. A number of club members competed in the championships in conditions that were not quite ideal with cooler temperatures and a strong breeze.
Tommy Byrnes competed in the A4 40-49 Category and came away with a great victory in a time of 27 minutes and 21 seconds. Ruaidhri Devitt performed well in the A4 Category with a time of 27 minutes and 43 seconds while Pat Ryan produced a time of 28 minutes and 34 seconds. Dermot Radford competed in the A3 Category with a time of 25 minutes and 22 seconds giving him the silver medal.
The times were good in difficult conditions and the club continues to make a name for itself in competition throughout Munster.
Week 6 of the Cycling Pursuits Time Trial League was held on Thursday 02 June and the club had four members, Ruaidhri Devitt, Tommy Byrnes, Dermot Radford and Liam Butler (representing Limerick Tri Club), competing over the 18.3km course. Warm sunshine and a light breeze meant that conditions were good for time trialling and times were quick.
Liam recorded 28 min 50 sec, Ruaidhri posted a time of 27 min 20 sec with Tommy clocking a time that was 5 seconds faster at 27 min 15 sec, while Dermot posted 25 min 18 sec on the night.
Next week is the final week of the league where final positions in the league will be decided. Week 3 of the Cycling Pursuits Time Trial League was held on Thursday 05 May. This week was the first of the two-man time trials where competitors took on the course in pairs, assisting each other, and it is the time of the last person from the pair crossing the line that is counted. Two-man time trialling can be extremely difficult especially if one rider is slightly stronger than the other and the transition from one rider to the other is important in maintaining speed and saving energy. Although the rain held off and the roads were reasonably dry, there was a very strong wind facing the riders on the way out, meaning at the turn point a tail wind assisted the time trialists on the way home.
From the 56 competitors on the night, the Tipperary Wheelers had only two representatives, John McCormack and Dermot Radford. Other members of the club chose to sit out this week’s time trials and instead focus on the weekend triathlon taking place on Sunday. John was paired with Paul Dillon from the Cycling Pursuits club and together they put in a time of 30 min 36 sec. Dermot was paired with local Tipperary man Simon Ryan, representing Kanturk Cycling Club, and they put in the second best time on the night of 26 min 17 sec.
Overall that still leaves Dermot holding a slender lead in the Elite category, just one point ahead of Simon and John has moved up to sixth position in the Vet category. Having sat out the time trial this week, Tommy Byrnes has dropped to third position in the Vet category, however with the best 6 from 7 positions counted Tommy can still make up the five points on the current leader.
There will be a break in the time trial league next week and it will resume again on Thursday 19 May. It has been confirmed that Cycling Pursuits will also be hosting the Munster Time Trial Championships on the same course immediately following completion of the current league. Full details of the league can be found on the Cycling Pursuits website at cyclingpursuits.ie
